Blackpool illuminations at night!!

202055It’s been a short while since I flew at night so I arranged to do a trip with some pals and my other arf at night to include a trip up the Fylde coast to see the Blackpool illuminations.

Night flying is really something else. It really does add another dimension to your flying and I would highly recommend it to anyone with a suitably equipped aircraft. What I would say though, is that it’s not for the inexperienced or casual flyer, as you will see in the video. Whilst the straight and level flight is relatively straight forward, as is departures to and from an airfield, private landing sites particularly one’s that are not illuminated are challenging to say the very, very least.

The golden rule here is PPPPPPFIT (Prior, planning and preparation prevents piss poor flight into terrain). Basically, if you think that flying a chopper badly during the day might be unforgiving then you aint seen nothing yet baby! When flying at night into a private HLS you need to be 200% on your game, with a planned approach profile, mapped out in your head, and preferably flown during the day to be certain.

My NAVEX took in 5 night landings at 5 different sites, 4 of which I know like the back of my hand. On the final approach to two of them, I lost my reference to them and I had been taught to immediately initiate a go around, even if I was certain I would find them again. If the plan falls apart even to the smallest degree I’ve got to  abort and start over again. I ended up throwing away 5 approaches in total and I have to say that it’s the correct procedure.

The video is not the best quality, but you’ll get the idea. I’ve speeded some of the footage up so that you don’y get bored of looking at glowing lights, but persevere to the end where you will see the landing – but not the landing site!!!

Enjoy

  2. Hi Frank,

David isn’t involved with G-LADZ. If you contact me through this forum I should be able to help you.
